The wisdom of Shakespeare

Shakespeare found opal to be a symbol of shifting inconstancy, likening the opals play of colour to the play of mind. In one of the most apt uses of gemstone symbolism in literature, ‘Twelfth Night’, he wrote:

“Now the melancholy God protect thee, and the tailor make thy garments of changeable taffeta, for thy mind is like opal”.
